Have You started Yet?
My Mom had her periods when she was 13 years old. And here I am experiencing puberty at 12 years. So, what’s the right age to start your periods? Well, there is no reason to judge yourself, these days one can start their periods between 11-14 years of age.
I had my periods just two months back. It was a Sunday morning and I was brushing when I experienced something was trickling down my legs. I knew what it could be as my super intelligent mom had already given me few lessons on puberty. But let me tell you one gets to know it better when one experiences it.
Questions that must be driving you crazy?
- what a period is and how often periods come
- how much blood will come out and how many days the bleeding is likely to last
- whether periods hurt
- how to use and dispose of pads and tampons
- what to do if I get her period away from home – for example, at school or camp
- whether you can swim when she has her period
- should use tampons or pads first.
- Most important various cultural taboos attached to it.
So, here’s a little about the inside story.
- Don’t fret periods rather embrace it.
- They can be light, heavy, brown or black that depends upon your body biology.
- Sometimes you may experience cramps which is normal.
- Its always better to carry pads the moment you hit the age of 11 years.
- I prefer comfy cotton pads to tampons but that personal preference.
- Period cycle is of 5 days- the first period you may face 3-5 days cycle.
- While each culture & community have some taboos- rituals associated with periods; I feel as long as they are not superstitious or discriminatory in nature; there is no harm in practicing religious- social sentiments.
Women Biology
Mom says it’s important that once you enter puberty you keep a track of your body health. So, few things that I have made part of my routine is.
- 30 minutes brisk walk
- Less fried & junk food
- Detoxify your gut
- Multivitamins & Calcium
- Personal Hygiene
- Gynae Checkup once in 6 months
- Annual Body Check Up
PADS VS TAMPOONS VS MENSTRUAL CUPS
Well, there is no this or that on this. One should try both and see what is comfortable to one’s system.
Both have their advantages and disadvantages. I personally prefer pads as they are super comfy. My personal favorite is Whisper Ultra Soft.
Handling of Sanitary Waste
In my country India; according to Solid Waste Management (SWM) Rules, 2016, every household must segregate waste into three fractions — wet, dry and domestic hazardous waste.
It is important to ensure that sanitary waste should be properly wrapped. The rules say that sanitary waste should be kept in the dry waste bin and should be handed over separately. But most of us fail to practice basic civic habits and disposed it in bins even without wrapping. The waste collector separates this waste from other household waste with bare hands, and that’s life threatening for them with diseases like Hepatitis and Aids.
Technology & Periods
Periods last till an age of 46 years for an average Indian Woman. And so, its very important to keep a track of your regularity, signs, discomforts etc.
It is essential as it helps in long run to diagnose any irregularities or any health concerns like PCOD, Fibroids in later life.
My Mom recommended P.S Love app for tracking Period. I am totally in love with the same.
